Negli ultimi anni i mass media hanno utilizzato in modo assai continuativo la parola 'populismo', allo scopo di descrivere l'ascesa dei movimenti euroscettici o la vittoria di Donald Trump.
Senza addentrarsi nella definizione e nell'analisi delle diverse varianti del populismo, c'è da dire che effettivamente negli ultimi tempi c'è stato un proliferare di movimenti e iniziative populistiche(spesso legate al populismo di destra, ma non solo).
Andando maggiormente nello specifico, c'è da dire che il 'l'ondata populista' presenta sia pregi che limiti e più chiaramente lati positivi e negativi.
Difatti, la stessa ondata populista è riuscita a far emergere il disagio e l'insoddisfazione dei cittadini verso le politiche dell'attuale establishment, aprendo la strada ad un'ipotetica creazione di un progetto politico che miri alla trasformazione dell'attuale sistema dominante e ad una maggiore partecipazione popolare e anche democratica.
Dall'altro canto, c'è da dire che la stessa ondata presenta delle insidie ed esse sono legate al fatto che lo stesso 'cavalcare l'indignazione popolare' e la delegittimazione delle élite in quanto tali non è certamente costruttivo e c'è anche da aggiungere il fatto che possa risultare in qualche modo pericolosa per il perpetuarsi delle istituzioni democratiche e liberali.
Detto questo, c'è da dire che sarebbe indubbiamente auspicabile che l'ondata populista non venga "snobbata" ma analizzata e, se necessario, guidata verso finalità costruttive e positive.
