I'll start off with my build:

  • CPU: i7-8700K overclocked to 4.8GHz
  • RAM: 8GB - Corsair Vengeance LPX (waiting for Corsair to progress my RMA to get me back to 16GB)
  • Mobo: MSI Z370 SLI PLUS ATX
  • Liquid Cooler: Cooler Master Nepton 240M (mounted to inside top of case)
  • GPU: MSI 1070 Gaming X
  • SSD: 180GB Corsair Force GT
  • HDD: 1TB WD Black
  • PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 650W Gold
  • Case: Fractal Design Define R5 Blackout Edition

Also got a Corsair AF140 on the front & one of the stock 140mm case fans on the back

I've recently upgraded from an i5-6600K & ASUS Z170-A to what I've got now. Ever since installing I can't get satisfactory temps when stress testing CPU.

When I stress test with CPU-Z it jumps to 60c straight away then my temps climb to around 87c. Prime95 small FFTs test jumps my temps to 91c & within a few seconds they hit high 90s, so obviously I stop the test seconds after starting it.

Things I've tried:

  • Reseated CPU / pump
  • Changed the position of my fans on my radiator, so instead of the radiator being mounted to the top of my case, it's my fans with the radiator underneath
  • Maxed out fan RPMs in BIOS & stress tested with CPU-Z
  • Reset BIOS to default settings then stress tested
    • After that I changed vcore from auto to a reasonable voltage (1.25)
  • My radiator fans have always been connected to separate headers for some reason so connected them to a splitter & now they're both on the CPU fan header
  • Updated MSI BIOS to latest beta version (7B46vA41 - it's getting great feedback so was happy to give it a go)

When stress testing I used HWMonitor, CPU-Z and RealTempGT.

I know my PC will never hit a load like it does when stress testing but it would be nice to get normal stress testing temps. When playing games, Destiny 2 for example, my temps are around 55c-65c.

Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm losing the will to live!
