I finally convinced my parents to get an external drive to backup their computer. I would suggest them a backup software to schedule weekly backups. With ransomware being the biggest malware threat in the last years, I'm concerned for the safety of the backups. If the backup drive is connected, it might get encrypted as well, in which case it would be useless. So I'm wondering, how should I cope with this?
Maybe have them disconnect the drive after each backup and connect it only when the next one is due? But that is a hassle and carries the risk of them simply not doing it. Is there backup software with a reminder to plug in the backup drive? Or shouldn't I worry about ransomware encrypting the backups? (They're doing ok with the computer and managed the last ten years without an infection btw, it's not that I'm waiting for it to happen, but better safe than sorry)
Are there any other strategies to protect against ransomware that are feasible without purchasing additional backup drives, and is not a hassle for laymen?
