I need to use a headset with microphone for work. When it's plugged in (3.5mm jack), windows device manager only shows one option for playback and recording in device manager. If I unplug the headset, those same 'devices' show up in device manager, and work, but now they are the mic and speakers of my laptop.
The main issue: My microphone is so damn quiet. I have mic boost all the way up, I've disabled audio enhancements, and I know the headset is fine (my computer has the same issue with another headset, and this one is new). If I'm not using the headset, the mic and playback levels of the laptop's devices are fine, but I'm required to use a headset for work. Plus, since I can't see the various devices listed, I can't tell the laptop to ignore my headset mic and use the built-in mic instead.
Now, if I uninstall all audio devices and drivers via device manager, then reboot windows, it seems to solve the problem (of not seeing the different devices) for a bit. I can actually open up device manager and see different devices listed, such as my laptop microphone vs. headset mic, on board speakers vs. headset. I can select them, individually tweak them, and rename them. However, after a minute or so, a Windows notification comes up saying a reboot is required to finish setting up Realtek HD Audio, so I restart, and I'm back to where I started and can no longer select or even see the various devices I have connected.
I just want to be able to simply plug in my headset and have it function properly. It's a bonus to see that my computer knows all the devices (laptop mic, laptop speakers, headset mic, headset speakers) exist, but I just really need to be able to adjust my headset mic settings so it can function properly.
Seems like a tall order at the moment.
Please, someone who is well versed in the troubles of Realtek and Windows 10: help me. You are my only hope.
TL;DR: Realtek HD Audio is giving me issues. I can't see my different audio devices listed in device manager, and my headset microphone is incredibly quiet, even while turned and boosted all the way up.
Oh, and yes, I've made sure my headset works with other devices, and the physical volume buttons are all the way up. It's an issue with W10 and Realtek.
