My Sony VAIO laptop has always been a hot head, and it is due to a few factors. The first of which is no switchable graphics, so the GeForce 410M runs all the time. The second is a shared cooling solution where a single heat pipe travels over both CPU and GPU (first CPU, then GPU). The combined TDP of the CPU + GPU is 47 W (35 + 12), but the cooling system looks more suited to only 35 W. A single fan runs all the time to keep the temps in check, with average GPU temps being around 45 degrees C and CPU being between 50 to 55 degrees C. Under load, those temps are very high at 70 on the GPU and 80 on the CPU, but it can go even higher if I really torture it.
The laptop is mint-like clean inside, with no dust anywhere. I service it rather regularly, about twice a year. New thermal paste is on the CPU, GPU and chipset and is spread very evenly with no runoff. Different types of TIM have been used, with none actually having any substantial benefits. Mounting pressure is really good and the heat drops off sharply when the load is relieved, so the cooling solution is working as well as it can.
Basically, I want to know how I can further decrease temperatures, if it is even possible? I am very fond of this machine, since it is my first laptop and my first PC that wasn't the family computer. I use it daily, so I want it to work as effortlessly as possible. Thank you.
