The man who relishes demeaning nicknames like "Crooked Hillary," "Lyin' Ted," and "Little Rocket Man" now thinks that name-calling has gotten out of hand.
With the reputation of his now-withdrawn nominee for secretary of Veterans Affairs in tatters, President Donald Trump defended White House doctor and Rear Admiral Ronny Jackson against the criticism he received after allegations emerged that the physician had a history of workplace misconduct. Trump said he found the name-calling Jackson experienced — some called him "candyman" for his alleged habit of overprescribing medications — to be "disgraceful."
"Washington can be a very mean place," Trump said Friday at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "These were false accusations about a great man."
He continued: "To make statements of things most people said never happened, never even happened, calling him names, was to me a disgrace. An absolute disgrace."
Trump, of course, famously calls his political opponents and federal employees names constantly. He recently called former FBI Director James Comey "slippery James Comey" and a "slime ball." During the 2016 campaign and after, he constantly referred to Hillary Clinton as "crooked Hillary."
And despite his insistence that the claims against Jackson were false, he offered no actual evidence to refute the claims made by more than 20 people, both current and former military service members, who accused the doctor of misconduct. But since some of the accusations against Jackson — including berating staff and having an explosive temper — have also been made of Trump, it's not a surprise he would continued to defend the man.
