"I've had a number of predictions in this case — I don't think I've been wrong yet."
Michael Avenatti, the lawyer of the porn actor and director who is suing President Donald Trump, explained Monday night on MSNBC why he thinks the president is bound to resign before the end of his term.
"I think the amount of heat that is going to come down on Mr. Trump in connection with his personal attorney of ten years [Michael Cohen] turning on him and rolling on him will be insurmountable," Avenatti told Lawrence O'Donnell on "The Last Word." "And I think his only exit, in an effort to save whatever face he may have left at that time, will be to resign the office."
Avenatti represents Stephanie Clifford, better known as Stormy Daniels, in her case against the president and Cohen. Clifford says she had an affair with Trump in 2006 and that she was paid $130,000 to keep quiet about that relationship. She is now suing to break the non-disclosure agreement she signed.
Two weeks ago, federal agents raided Cohen's offices. They were reportedly searching for materials related to Clifford's hush money payment, and they are believed to have obtained communications Trump had with Cohen. This raid triggered Avenatti's prediction about Trump's resignation.
"I know a lot of people think that is a bold prediction," he said. "I've made a number of bold predictions in this case thus far, and I haven't been wrong. And I don't think I'm going to be wrong about this one."
