Trump's phone call to his friends at Fox News Thursday morning may end up causing him a lot of trouble.
MSNBC's Rachel Maddow appeared gleeful Thursday night as she explained exactly how President Donald Trump undermined his own lawyer's case earlier in the day.
When calling into Fox News' "Fox & Friends," Trump discussed the case concerning the federal raid of his lawyer Michael Cohen's offices and home. Trump and his defenders have claimed that this raid will violate the president's attorney-client privilege because his correspondences with Cohen were swept up in the search. Trump's lawyers have been arguing that he should be able to review which materials are covered by attorney-client privilege.
"Their whole case for protecting Michael Cohen and for protecting the president in the Michael Cohen case, the whole kit-and-kaboodle of their argument, is that Michael Cohen is safe from prosecution and even investigation ... because of his voluminous, confidential privileged legal communication between himself as an attorney and his one substantive remaining client," Maddow said. "Because he does such a massive amount of legal work for President Trump, he and Trump should be safe in this case."
But talking on Fox Thursday, Trump noted that Cohen is mostly a businessman and that he handles a "tiny" percentage of the president's overall legal work. These facts — which were later cited in a legal filing against the president and Cohen's efforts to protect the seized documents — undermine the argument that Trump's relationship with Cohen is covered extensively by legal privilege.
