Michael Avenatti wants you to know how big a deal it is that President Donald Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen took the Fifth Amendment in the Stormy Daniels case.
Appearing on MSNBC Wednesday night, Avenatti, the lawyer representing Stephanie Clifford (AKA Stormy Daniels), discussed the latest development in the lawsuit and what it means for the president. The president and Cohen are currently being sued by Clifford to release her from a non-disclosure agreement she signed that requires her to keep quiet about an affair she says she had with Trump in 2006.
But Cohen invoked the Fith Amendment's protection against self-incrimination on Wednesday in the case, which Avenatti says is a monumental event.
Cohen says "he can't answer the questions because the answers will incriminate him," Avenatti told Lawrence O'Donnell on "The Last Word." "This is a staggering development. It cannot be over exaggerated. It cannot be overstated. This is a big deal."
He pointed out that just a few weeks ago, Trump referred any questions about the lawsuit and Clifford's claims to Cohen. With Cohen taking the Fifth, the president's insistence that he should take questions on the matter becomes untenable.
