Hello,
I have been having a repeat issue with my laptop. Very regularly (at least once a week) my screen stops working. The screen is active but black, and the laptop keeps running. A bit as if it's being connected to an external screen but without actually having one plugged in. Sometimes it freezes as well, for example the backgroundmusic will get stuck on one tone but it will keep repeating that tone. At first this started when I was using particularly heavy software, but now it even happens when using only google chrome of even just windows explorer. Some days it works fine, and I can't find a pattern. Sometimes I get a blue screen with the error DPC WATCHDOG VIOLATION. Sometimes the computer tries a reset, but it always gets stuck somewhere with a black screen. The only solution so far was to turn it off by pressing the on button, and waiting a few minutes until trying to turn it on again.
One time I had the laptop connected to an external screen and I saw very quickly a notification pop up that the monitor driver had stopped working, but the external screen kept showing the regular, extended screen. I couldn't get the computer to do anything so I pressed the on button until it closed down, waited a few minutes, then turned it on again.
I had some guys from the IT support at my uni look at it, and they updated the drivers of my graphics cards. I thought it was solved but today I tried to connect my laptop to a friend's TV and immediately the screen would go black, and I would get stuck again in that loop of trying to get the computer to turn on, not working, turn off again, wait, turn on and it was as normal again. This time I had to wait a very long time until I could turn it on again. The charger was working as that light was lit up, but the laptop wouldn't turn on at all. I waited about two hours until trying again and it turned on as if nothing had happened.
The HDMI port has been acting weird anyway, sometimes for example if I'm showing a movie on my laptop, projected on the tv, the voices from the sound coming from the TV become very high-pitched. Repeatedly unplugging and plugging the HDMI cable has so far worked to solve this.
What's going on with my laptop? The IT guys at my uni couldn't think of anything, except a hard reset of my laptop and installing all programs again. I would like to save that option for last, as I have a ton of software to install in that case. (Arch student, so I need the adobe suite, autocad, revit, etc. It would take days.)
My specs:
-
BTO Notebooks laptop (3 years old)
-
Windows 8.1
-
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4710MQ CPU @ 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz
-
RAM 8,00 GB
-
64 bits
-
Graphics cards: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M
-
Samsung SSD 840 ECO 120GB mSATA (combo with hard drive of 1 TB)
If anyone has any suggestions that aren't "reinstall your whole computer" or "send it back to the factory" I would be incredibly grateful! If those are my only options... well damn.
