My mother in law recently dropped her laptop (of course without admitting to it, but the damage is obvious), and I get the phone call to fix it. The CPU fan is very damaged and making a grinding noise as it runs. I bought a replacement fan, powered it on, and everything went great. I put the shell back on, screwed everything in, and ran the computer.

Went to shut it down and my only option, of course, is "Update and shut down". Choose it as my option, but as the computer is shutting down there isn't an update, it's just a normal shutdown.

Now when I try to power it on, I get nothing. No beep codes, no fans or lights kicking on then turning back off immediately, nothing. It's like I don't hit the button at all. When I plug the charger into the laptop, the light for the charger lights up. When I plug in the battery, the light changes orange for charging. If I unplug the jumper array of power, reset, power & HDD LEDs, then the light shuts off. So I tried jumping it with a paper clip, nada. I guess I'm looking help to diagnose my problem. If windows update actually broke something I'd at least get a beep code or get through the UEFI. I have no idea if this is a power supply problem or power jumper problem. I would need an ohm meter to test the resistors and see if it's working properly, right?

I can't wait to have to tell her this. Especially since we talked her out of Apple. And her response will be "At least the Apple Geniuses would've been able to fix it, even if it were expensive!" Yeah, because they throw whole motherboards and other parts away and replace them with new ones until it turns on...
