If I build a NAS, I'm probably looking at building a fairly powerful rack-mount server through Orange Computers. If I buy a NAS I'm probably looking at getting a Synology DS218+ with a pair of 4TB drives. If I go the internal storage route, I'll replace my single 2TB Seagate Barracuda with the same pair of 4TB drives that I would use in the NAS/server.
I don't currently use any network features with my desktop, so I wouldn't be missing anything if I didn't go the NAS/server route. With that said, I think the networkability of a NAS/server would be a good upgrade.
If I were to go with internal storage and go from a single 7200RPM 2TB Seagate BarraCuda to dual 7200RPM WD Red Pro 4TB drives at RAID 1, would I need to change my usage at all? Would file transfers be slower? Will any performance be impacted while my z170I motherboard is mirroring the data between the drives?
I have a 256GB 950 PRO M.2 drive for my OS/Program Files and a 250GB 850 EVO for general temporary storage, so I don't need my large storage to be super fast--it won't read or write all that frequently. Going with a server and keeping my internal 2TB drive, I would just push data to a NAS every few months for backup purposes. What do you think is the best option for me? Can I really go wrong?
