Problem:

My PC restarts 4-10 times a week at random intervals and I just can't figure out why. There are no errors or symptoms prior, it just shuts down as if it's been unplugged and starts up again on its own. There's nothing in the event log right before the restart, only event 6008 (Previous shutdown was unexpected) and event/kernel-power 41 (System rebooted without cleanly shutting down).

Clues:

It never happens while I'm afk. It's always while I'm doing something. More often than not, it's right after I press a key for whatever reason; usually this is hitting enter in Slack, sometimes it's clicking "send" in my mail client or simply typing something. It usually happens in the afternoon or at night when the PC has been on for 6-7 hours but it has happened 1 hour into the day as well.

My system is also riddled with event 10016's, several per day but these are mostly during startup and don't seem to be related to the restarts but I sure hope they are.

It happened first several months ago while playing World of Warcraft, didn't happen again for weeks. The frequency however has shortened but still random. It might happen twice in one day or not for up to 3-4 days.

What I've done so far:

  • Fresh installs + updates didn't work.
  • For a long time I thought this was related to event 10016's but then I realized the timestamps in the event viewer didn't suggest this. I spent a lot of time trying to resolve this error but I eventually gave up for now, as I don't even notice it.
  • I took out the RAM's in pairs and ran the computer on 2x2 GB and 2x4 GB modules, it still happened.
  • I ran checkdisk and another test on my SSD as suggested on some forum, there were no errors.
  • My PSU was 8-10 years old, I replaced it hoping it would be the end of it. It wasn't.

My system:

  • Windows 10 64b
  • AMD A8-7650K
  • GeForce GT 740
  • 12 GB RAM
  • Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB
  • 2 extra hard drives

Help me r/techsupport; you're my only hope.
