In January I bought a brand new house which has 6 RJ45 ports and is wired with Cat6 cable terminating in the garage. Not really knowing what I'm doing, after fiber was connected from the street to the optical network terminal (also in the garage), I got a contractor to come and wire the loose cat 6 cables into a patch panel. I spoke with him about how best to proceed to ensure I could run my desktop computer and PS4 via ethernet cables in some of the rooms while also having the router relatively central in the house in the living room to give good even wifi coverage through the house.
To accomplish what I wanted the contractor installed a port switch in the cabinet in the garage. He then used two data splitters to send the ONT signal to the router in the living room and to return it to the switch and then patch panel in the garage. This gave signal through the RJ45 ports throughout the house. However, now that I've upgraded to gigabit fiber, I have hit a speed problem with the two data splitters only being able to support 100mbps.
So at present, the ONT is connecting directly into the patch panel and sending signal to the living room where the router is. As a result there is only wifi in the house, except for where ethernet cables can be run from the router itself, rather than the wall jacks. How am I best to proceed to get the wall jacks live again with the gigabit signal, rather than paying extra for a gigabit connection and being stuck at 100mbps?
