So as the title says, my morning is off to a great start. I tried to open my laptop this morning only to have it freeze on start up. Literally as it froze (within about a 5 minute period) I received a call from a man claiming to be microsoft tech support, claming that their server had detected a virus on my computer. (Phone number was 1-888-395-0555, but could be spoofed?). Importanly he claimed that their server showed that my IP address had been infected with the Torpig virus, and that any system connected could be infected.
He then asked me to use my phone (I took it off wifi i prevent infection) to go to the google play store and download an app called Teamviewer QuickSupport. I told him I wasnt comfortanle with that, would do some research, and call him back. He gave me his name, extension, and microsoft employee ID (supposedly) and a number to call back at (1-888-889-7833).
Heres where it gets even more interesting. As Im hanging up, my wife boots up her computer. Within 5 minutes I get the same call from the same guy again. Either windows 10 is very good at responding to this stuff, or there is a scammer who has me dead center in his sites.
Is this legit? I have several computers attached to my home network, all running windows 8 or 10 (this week I upgraded the PC to windows 10). So far, malware bytes, Windows defender, and and Bitdefender havent caught anything. My laptop has just started having issues, so I could buy that it caught something, and looking up Torpig, its not something I want. For now Im pulling the plug on my home network until I can figure out if this phone call is on the level. Hoping that will at least prevent the spread of data outside my network. Really would like opinions as to whether or not to pursue this course of action. Other course of action would be to reimage all systems (huge PITA), but if its infected my router/modem, I have no idea how to fix that.
