I have a Lenovo U430 that has a SSD and HDD in a dual-boot configuration: Ubuntu on the SSD, Windows on the HDD. This setup has been stable for a couple of years.
I would like to wipe the Ubuntu / partition and install another distro, but I can no longer boot from USB or my USB DVD drive. Booting from USB is enabled, and I have done so in the past.
I can access the BIOS (InsydeH2O 3.7) but no changes will persist. I set the boot priority and enable legacy mode, but the computer boots straight into Grub on the SSD. When I shut down and go back to the BIOS, the changes are gone. I have successfully changed settings in the past, such as enabling virtualization.
I've seen things online that suggest an administrative password is necessary - even this does not persist across reboots.
I thought it might be the CMOS battery, but I pulled that and checked it with a multimeter. It still reads over three volts.
I pulled the CMOS battery out overnight and was able to set the time correctly again, but no other settings changes will stick.
When I hit the button to start the BIOS a different option for the boot menu appears. It offers Ubuntu, Windows, and network PXE. None of these are the USB drive.
The firmware/BIOS version is the most current on the lenovo site.
After having problems I have been testing with a known good bootable USB I used on another system. Initially I was using a Debian image created with Yumi.
Potential courses of action:
Neither of these fix the problem of my BIOS failing to save changes, but would potentially allow me to reinstall the OS.
What other options could I try?
