Hey all
Did a windows 10 update last night that appears to have completely bricked my computer. Trying hard to stop myself from going on a tirade about how I was forced to either update and shut down or update and restart and was therefore forced into an update which has knackered my computer (I really really hate windows 10) but anyway...
I was able to log in for a while this morning and noticed that my Discord crashed on updating, so I closed it, minimised Chrome (which seemed to close the programme instead of minimising it) to get to my desktop to relaunch it, and suddenly the screen went black. I noticed that the fans on my PC seemed to be working abnormally hard too, though that isn't happening on reboots.
For whatever reason, task manager works perfectly, so I'm able to restart the PC, but after the log in screen (which takes longer than usual) the screen goes black and nothing works but the ctrl-alt-del screen and task manager. Even booting into safemode gives me the same black screen. However when I hold shift and click the power button on the ctrl-alt-del screen to get to the boot options, an error appears. The error is named svchost.exe - Application Error. It reads:
'The exception unknown software exception (0xc000000d) occured in the application at location 0x00007FFF2121B290.
Click on OK to terminate the programme.'
From looking around online, it sounds like a bad graphics driver has downloaded, but I cannot get to device manager to get rid of it. Can I do that through task manager somehow? If that's not the issue, what do I need to do? I'm not sure I can get you error logs because the PC isn't bluescreening and even if it was I'm not sure I could access them.
My spec (let me know if you need more detail and I'll try to seek it out through invoices):
- Motherboard: MSI X99A SLI PLUS Haswell Extreme USB 3.1 ATX Moth
- Processor: i7 5820K 3.30
- Graphics: Sapphire r9 390
- RAM: 16GB (2 x 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3200)
- HDDs: 250GB samsung solid state boot drive + 3TB Toshiba secondary HDD
- I have two BenQ monitors if that's relevant. One is a GL2450 (newer) and the other a G2420HDBL
This is a PC I build myself and which has never had a real issue until today. I'm a bit worried (and furious with Microsoft but that's not unusual I suppose).
