Hello everyone, first thanks a ton for your help, I think you're all awesome!
My windows update is hung up on 2018-01 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4056892) . It is awaiting a restart, and cannot finish. The symptoms I have are that if I shut down the PC (laptop) using Start> Shutdown, and then boot it up again, it acts as if it had been in sleep mode, restoring what windows I had open, Chrome tabs, etc. Even if I use the Restart button within the Windows Update applet thing, these symptoms persist. Also of note, when Windows asks me to log in, typing my password will show the animation of logging in, but then it simply stops and fades away back into the standard background of the log in screen. Pressing any key brings back the prompt as you'd expect, and it will always work the second time I try, but never the first.
