tl;dr: Windows "works" but doesn't show anything Windows-related besides the Desktop background i.e. cursor, desktop icons, start menu, task bar, etc.
Problem: I'm using Windows 7. Yesterday, I had a power outage on my PC. I tried booting it afterwards: the BIOS loaded, Windows logo appeared, and it looked like it was going to the login screen, but it didn't seem to. While no login prompt displayed (the screen is black, but not off), I can login, where I'll be taken to my Desktop, but only the background (cursor, start menu, icons, etc). I can't seem to use the Windows key to Run applications in this state.
I tried:
- chkdsk C: /R via Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
- Startup Repair
- System Restore.
- Reinstalling Graphics Card drivers via Safe Mode.
The monitor works and it receives a signal for everything. The PC works except for when I boot Windows in non-safe mode (clean boots don't work either).
As far as I can tell, it is a video drivers problem, but reinstalling those drivers didn't help, so I've hit a wall. I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows, given the time it takes. Any help would be appreciated!
