I have a friend's A1278 MacBook Pro 13" Mid-2012 (these use an integrated HD Graphics 4000 gpu unlike the bigger models) with some funky stuff going on. It boots, the chime plays, the caps lock button lights work but no backlight or video appear from the screen. I worked through the general steps of eliminating possible issues, resetting everything, changed ram, disconnected all the SATA drives, disconnected the wnic, and no change. I inspected and cleaned the motherboard which has no obvious shortage damage or smells coming from the area around the video connection or inverter, or elsewhere. If I shine a light into the black screen there's no picture. Now here's where it gets stupid. If I stick in a live Linux usb and boot it from that with all other things disconnected the backlight comes on and is controllable in brightness by the f1/f2 keys but still no video. If I boot from a OSX install USB, no backlight. The mini Displayport also don't output any video, so it seems to be narrowed down to a logic board problem which I would have just said ok, let's replace it but the backlight issue is really confusing me. Any input? I can't find anything on the googles about anything similar.
