So this all started yesterday, when my internet connection went out. Unusually, it wasn't detecting any connections whatsoever, even plugging it in via Ethernet cable did nothing.
So I then decided to restart my computer, it wouldn't restart, it just stayed on the "restarting" screen. I left it for about an hour and eventually it seemed to have restarted (based on what I just experienced, it probably blue screened at some point). The internet still would not work. I kept trying to restart and shut down and I got various things, like "this program is stopping shut down" (the two which stopped the shut down were called "G" and "Task Host Manager." This does not happen every time, sometimes it would just refuse to shut down with no reason given. Hard reset does nothing.
Then for no reason at all, internet started working again, and I could restart normally. Great, I thought, back in business. But then after an hour or so, had the same problems. I have tried updating drivers and updating Windows (But apparently I am on the latest version of everything). I am currently manually downloading drivers for my Wi-Fi from the Intel website.
I am a bit worried about all this, because I am currently doing analysis on my thesis project and all my software and data are on this computer (I have them backed up, but ideally I need to use this computer).
It seems to have no rhyme nor reason, but what I can say is it always starts when the internet goes out. After That, I can no longer properly restart or shut down my computer. Sometimes "Task Host Manager" stops shut down, sometimes the screen goes black but does not fully turn off, sometimes I blue screen (maybe more often, I leave my laptop and go do other stuff when it is trying to restart). It will successfully restart when the internet is working, but not when it is not.
If this driver download does not help, what should I do? Ideally I do not want to fully reset my computer, as I just don't have time for reinstalling all my software and downloading all my files and documents. However, I will do this if it is the most prudent way to sort this. What thoughts do people have? I have tried to be as thorough as I can, but let me know if I can provide more information.
P.s. I have this theory that my Xbox wireless controller causes problems on my laptop. This might be an erroneous theory, but do these things ever cause problems?
Anyway, I welcome all comers in trying to help and would be forever grateful as this is taking up a lot of my time and as I never know when it will stop working, it makes me very anxious waiting for it to happen!
