"This is more change than human beings are designed to digest," he said.
Tucker Carlson broadcast a segment of his show this week meant to rattle and scare the Americans about rising "demographic changes," delivering a racist monologue implying that living with Latino immigrants is an intrinsic burden.
Pointing to a National Geographic article focusing on the town of Hazleton, Pennsylvania, which recently went a major demographic shift when it's population went from majority non-Hispanic white to majority Latino.
"That's bewildering for people," Carlson said. "No nation, no society has ever changed this much, this fast."
He continues: "It doesn't matter how nice the immigrants are. They probably are nice. Most immigrants are nice! That's not the point. The point is: This is more change than human beings are designed to digest. This pace of change makes societies volatile. Really volatile. Just as ours has become volatile."
In other words, even though immigrants are nice, they're a problem. Why? Because they're different.
Of course, Carlson is wrong. The United States itself has gone undergone similar periods of demographic change before. Immigration rates in the late 1800s were as high or higher than they are now. The big problem then, as now, was racism against the immigrants, which resulted in the bigoted Chinese Exclusion Act.
It's true that when societies change, sometimes it makes people uncomfortable. The responsible thing to do is to remind people that the vast majority of immigrants a decent, hardworking people, and that there's no reason people of different ethnic backgrounds can get along.
Instead, Carlson chooses to engage in vague and ominous predictions of "volatility," suggesting that a diverse society is somehow inherently dangerous.
Another layer to the shame of promoting these fears of immigrants is that it promotes policies that would be bad for towns like Hazleton anyway. As National Geographic notes, the Hazleton was a declining coal town before it's population started rebounding, thanks to the Hispanic people who moved in.
Immigration can help revitalize and enliven struggling communities — immigration is then a boon for immigrants and native residents. Giving in to fearmongers like Carlson would leave everyone worse off.
