The former presidential candidate pointed out that men in her position don't face the same criticism.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rebutted the multitudinous calls for her to "shut up" and "go away" during a speaking engagement on Thursday, arguing that men in her position are never faced with the same chastisement.
"I was really struck by how people said that to me, mostly in the press," she said at an event at Rutgers University. "They never said that to any man who was not elected."
She continued: "I'm really glad that Al Gore didn't stop talking about climate change, and I'm really glad that John Kerry went to the Senate and became an excellent secretary of state. And I’m really glad John McCain kept speaking out and standing up and saying what he had to say. And for heavens sakes, Mitt Romney is running for the Senate!"
It seems undeniable that sexism played a significant role in the 2016 campaign, and it continues to play a role in the way Clinton is treated. But Clinton also noted a few other reasons that could contribute to her being treated differently than other failed presidential candidates.
The expectation was that she was going to win, which likely made the disappointment among many that she lost even harder to take. Her loss led to a lot of "angst and fingerpointing," she notes. There was a reason she felt the need to write a book called What Happened.
Nevertheless, her critics shouldn't expect her to go away anytime soon.
"I am really committed to speaking out and doing what I can to have a voice in the debate about where our country's going," she said. "You won't be surprised to hear me say, I have some concerns. We need to all be talking about it, not just me, but everyone one of us needs to be speaking up and taking part."
