Backstory: about a month ago my wife's iPhone was having issues with inconsistent charging. Sometimes it would, sometimes it wouldn't when plugged in. We figured it was probably the cord since it was somewhat old and a previous cat of ours had chewed on it a little. Go out, buy a new one, charging goes fine.
Skip forward to last night, the phone is having the same issues as before. Thinking it can't be the new cord already my first thought is that it might be a problem with the usb charging port. So I decided to quick check and see if my computer can charge it fine. When I go to do this my computer was not powered on, but I know that it was working because I have a small usb salt lamp that was on. Immediately as I plug the cord into a usb port on the front I notice the salt lamp turns off. After a small moment of "wtf?" I try the power button on my pc, nothing. So I tried flipping the power switch to off, unplug and replug in the power supply, still nothing. It is completely unresponsive.
At this point I'm assuming that somehow the phone fried something in my computer. And seeing as how I get no response from trying to power on I'm thinking my power supply is dead. I'm less interested in how this happened and more interested in what part(s) broke so they can be replaced.
As a side note, I'm posting this at work so any suggestions about things to try will have to wait till later when I'm home around 7pm CST.
