This will be long since I want to include as many details as possible, even some that might not be related at all, for you guys to pick up what might be the cause of my problem. This goes back up to 2 weeks ago. TL;DR at the end.
Cleaning up my CPU and first incident with HDD
My CPU fan was making lots of noise, like, enough to me to barely hear what I do. I haven't cleaned it in 3-5 months so it is about time. I have done it plenty of times so I'm confident.
But the damn fan! The fan in the middle of the motherboard is such a bitch. It is supposed to fit in 4 holes and it barely goes in. I stayed like an hour trying to find the proper way to place it.
Impatience kicks in and I start using force. I notice the holes have scratches from where I'm forcing it, but hey, they don't look anywhere near those silver things in the board so it is fine? Right...?
I finally place the fan and ready to use the PC again. But within the first 2 minutes I get a BSOD! When the PC restarts, it doesn't detect the HDD. Ok, so perhaps in my struggle I might have moved something. I open the CPU again and what do I find, the cable that goes from the HDD to the motherboard was moved a bit and I guess it wasn't detecting the HDD correctly.
I put it properly and the PC starts running again. Not many problems occurred after that.
To make sure I had no other problems, I was ask to download CrystalDisk as well as using Command Prompt with WCIM comman to check my HDD health. Everything seems to be fine.
Windows Update problems
Oh look, Microsoft and its annoying updates. Gosh I dislike them, but well I can wait for it to finish. Problem is...they never finish.
ALL my attempts have ended in this 2 scenarios:
-
The update finishes and when starting Windows, everything is black. Nothing responds. Mouse isn't visible. Task Manager doesn't show up. I'm forced to restart from the CPU button. I have left it at night to see if it changes but no luck.
-
Update stops at 82% for no reason at all.
Since it never seems to end, I decided it might be Microsoft doing crappy updates again so I decide to simply not do it. But it is so annoying everytime a failed update occurs on my absence I have to wait to "Restore previous version of Windows".
Problem while playing
I resume my routine and proceed to play Heroes of the Storm. A game I have played for 2 years and never gave me problems.
But what is this? I'm lagging, but not for internet. It isn't freezing, it simply moves very slowly and at few frames. Someone makes a flashy spell and this shit froze for an instant! It is indeed a video/graphics problem. I know I don't have a proper graphics card and I rely in the included Intel Core i7, but it never gave me trouble like this.
I search for a solution and it is possible too much memory is occupied and it is time for a clean up. Odd because I haven't downloaded anything "heavy" recently. But ok, I delete about 20 gb and the game runs as usual again.
Note: My HDD is 1.8 TB in total (partitioned) and had about 220 gb free, bow currently at 250 free gb
HDD incidents return
I haven't done anything remarkable recently. But this last week I have gotten constant BSOD and again, problems with the detection of the HDD. I open up the CPU again, but everything seems fine. No cable is out of place. Hmm. I just push them a bit into their respective places and it detects the HDD again.
More BSOD occur. Always about the HDD. It happened about 2-3 times per week.
In all those times, I solve it the same way. Open CPU, "tickle" the cables of the HDD. PC detects HDD again.
Playing triggers BSOD. Might be connected
I have a routine of doing my mundane things for easily 10 hours. I never have any sort of problem. Then by night, it is time for me to play Heroes of the Storm. But for the last 3 days, I have gotten a BSOD every time I try to play! I can start and see the menu really well, but when the actual game starts, it is instant BSOD.
One thing I might say stands out, when I start the game itself, I hear a peculiar sound from the CPU, like when you insert a CD in a player. I can still do anything after hearing that, but it goes BSOD when I play.
Some of these BSOD have been again, failures to detect the HDD, but now they are regular BSOD that simply restart the computer. And everytime I try to reconnect, I get another BSOD!
So I can do virtually anything for hours and hours, but when I try to play Heroes, it goes to shit.
Why only this game? I have tried other games and they run just fine.
TL;DR for cleaning CPU: I treated the insides of the CPU a bit harsh and accidentally disconnected the HDD from the motherboard. I wish to think simply connecting it again would solve the problem. Scans also show nothing is wrong.
TL;DR for Problems while playing: The game Heroes of the Storm shows graphical issues despite not doing the last 2 years I have played it. Freeing up space in the HDD seems to have solved the issue.
TL;DR for Windows Updates: Windows Updates never finish and freeze my PC
TL;DR for HDD problems return: BSOD and failed detection of HDD appear again despite everything being in (seemingly) in order.
TL;DR for Playing might trigger BSOD: Everytime I start Heroes of the Storm, a peculiar sound comes from the CPU, and when I start to actually play, a BSOD occurs. Only when starting playing, menus work fine and I can do other stuff with the game minimized.
TL;DR for my overall problem: Constant BSOD about not detecting the HDD. The game Heroes of the Storm seems to also trigger these BSOD.
Suspects
I asked for help from a pal and I got some suspects:
-
HDD: Might be corrupted or might have physical failure. Says perhaps "only the zone where Heroes of the Storm is placed" is the one failing, dunno how that works.
-
Graphics card: Since the game Heroes of the Storm triggers the BSOD, it might have a problem here.
-
RAM: He simply said I should check out this.
I don't really know how to check these issues. I'm in no crisis either, as I said, I can do anything as long at it doesn't involve HotS.
Hope all this information is useful.
