I have an Acer Aspire 5745G laptop, running Windows 10 Home. It's ~7 years old.
I fucked myself over today. A few of the keys on my keyboard weren't responding intermittently and I banged on the keyboard in rage. The laptop froze and I instantly regretted. A force reboot seemed to have worked. But after a few hours, I got BSoD and rebooted.
This time though, I started getting a "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" error on a black screen. I went into BIOS and it doesn't show any hard drive. I changed the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE and rebooted.
This time, the laptop goes to a blue recovery screen, which says "A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code: 0xc000000f." I press Enter as instructed at the bottom of the page. This time the blue recovery screen says "a required file is missing or contains error. File:\WINDOWS\System32\windload.exe". Further Enter or F8 presses keep returning me to this screen itself.
I downloaded Windows Media Creation tool on a secondary laptop and created installation media on a usb drive. I go into the BIOS. Now that the SATA mode was IDE, BIOS page does show the hard drive. I moved USB to the top of boot order and rebooted. When Windows 10 installation disk started, I clicked the "Repair your computer" at bottom left and then "Troubleshoot". Here, every option gave me errors only.
Startup Repair - "Couldn't repair your PC."
System restore - "restart this computer, select an OS". Except I don't get any OS option on restart.
RE-image your computer - doesn't detect the hard drive.
Command prompt - diskpart doesn't detect the disk and doesn't show any partitions. bootrec /rebuildbcd doesn't find any windows installation.
But when I go for "Install Now" instead of repair from the Windows 10 installations USB, only then it detects the hard drive. But even then it says Windows can't be installed on this disk. "Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in BIOS."
I'm at utter loss here. How do I proceed?
Also, is there any way to get the data off of this hard drive? The secondary laptop I have is Lenovo Thinkpad L440 and looks like that uses a different kind of HDD / SSD of much smaller dimension and the Acer HDD won't fit in that. Is my HDD hosed or is there any hope?
