I'll try to keep this short. The only thing I know for sure is that something very strange is going on with my laptops and my headphones.
I make most of my income from teaching online, and I live in South East Asia.
5 months ago: bought a new laptop. The laptop had some strange issues like screen flickering and not being responsive when trying to wake it up, but I didn't think too much of it.
3 months ago: I buy new apple earphones from an apple imitation store in southeast asia. quality seems identical to the ones that came with my iphone, and they function just the same with all my devices at this point. They were packaged just the same as ones that come from apple, and I think there's a good chance they actually did come from apple, since it was a nice store in a nice mall that only deals in apple products, and they were the exact same price as apple headphones.
2 months ago: People I am video chatting suddenly report a loud screeching/buzzing noise coming from my end. I contact support for my new laptop and they determine I'm having a hardware issue, likely the motherboard. Around this time, the laptop started having other serious problems like shutting down on it's own, starting up on it's own, freezing when a video goes full screen, and some other little things.
At this time, for work, I switched to my backup machine, a little Chromebook that has never had any issues. This completely fixed the audio issues, still using the new earphones, until...
Today: People start reporting the same screeching and buzzing sounds coming from my end, while I am using my backup machine, the Chromebook. The only thing these two situations have in common, besides the similar symptoms, are the new headphones.
I try switching to a backup pair of headphones, some $15 sony buds, also purchased in Southeast Asia. The screeching mostly subsides, but the audio quality is still degraded, and people I'm talking to continue to notice strange sounds and poor audio.
I never would've thought headphones could cause these kinds of issues, but I'm completely lost for what else could be the cause. I mean, is it really possible that a simple pair of headphones is responsible for pretty much destroying one very nice, high end laptop, and one cheap chromebook? It's also strange that no symptoms occurred until about a month of every day use with each machine and the headphones. What is the deal?
I'm desperate for answers and solutions, as my entire job rests on solving this problem. I hobbled through video calls today, and have a fully booked schedule for the next 5 days. Please help!
TL;DR: I've had 2 devices in the past 5 months crap out with similar symptoms. The only common factor between the 2 is that I'm using the same headphones. Is it possible for headphones to damage a computer?
