So I have both a laptop and a desktop PC. My desktop is currently my main computer when I'm at home because of the dual monitor setup, better keyboard, etc., while my laptop is obviously my main computer everywhere else.

I'm pretty tired of keeping my projects synced across the the systems however. Also I use Windows for games, and Linux for everything else and I dislike switching OS on the desktop when I want to switch between work and pleasure. Essentially I want to make my laptop my main computer for everything WITH my desktop peripherals when I'm at home, but still utilize the desktop pc when I want to play a game without having to switch OS or computer.

So I've come up with what I think could be a solution but I'd like to know it's even feasible.

Here's my plan:

  1. Set up my desktop to Windows only, launch steam on boot and set up WOL.
  2. Get a Thunderbolt 3 dock for my laptop
  3. Connect all my peripherals from my desktop PC to the dock.
  4. Connect the desktop pc and the dock with an ethernet cable.
  5. Utilize WOL to turn on the desktop from my laptop when needed.

With that setup I think I should be able to connect my laptop to the dock, still in Linux, open Steam and stream games from my desktop PC to my laptop using the wired connection to the dock so it won't lag.

I also considered just selling my desktop and buying an eGPU, but if this could work it'd be easier and I'd still have my desktop if I need the extra juice at some point. Also an eGPU wouldn't solve my OS switching problem as I still have some windows-only games I play. (Not interested in wine/POL/etc.)
