Hello. I have a problem with my i7-870 and I can't figure out what is causing it. It's running too hot, it idles at 57 - 65 degrees and goes as high as 90 degrees when gaming, where it should never go higher than 72 degrees according to Intel's website.

I think I've ruled out most of the usual suspects:

  • I've applied and re-applied the thermal paste twice, first time myself, second time by a pro. I'm pretty sure it was applied correctly both times.
  • The cooler is installed correctly as far as I can tell, everybody I've asked says it should be more than enough for an i7-870 running at normal clocks. It's a Spire Kepler Pro.
  • The case has plenty of room to breathe.
  • No malware or miner, I reformat the hard drive regularly. Last time was two days ago.

Someone suggested it might be irregular voltage, but that's beyond my area of expertise. The CPU was a somewhat recent upgrade from my old i5-661 which ran fine as far as I could tell. Gaming performance has increased significantly after the upgrade but I experience regular framerate drops in big, fast-paced games like GTA V. The rate at which they occur is consistent (every 3 minutes or so) which to me sounds like the CPU constantly tapping the brakes to avoid shutdown. Either that or it's the high RAM usage, or maybe those two issues are connected, not sure.

System information:

  • CPU: i7-879 2.9 Ghz (not overclocked, balanced power plan)
  • CPU Cooler: Spire Kepler Pro
  • RAM: 8GB DDR3 1333 Mhz (+16 GB virtual memory)
  • MB: Intel DP55WB LGA1156
  • GPU: Asus GTX 970 3.5 GB Turbo OC (not overclocked, set to optimal power)
  • PSU: Sirtec High Power Bronze II 600W
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit

Any help is appreciated.
