A myriad of issues culminating in power on failure. My setup is about 4 years old. I'm running windows 10 with an i5-2500k, a Z75 Pro3 mainboard, and a Corsair modular PSU. The newest component is my case which is about 6 months old.
So here's my story:
- I'm gaming as usual one evening and I get a hard lock up. These are very rare. I have to manually reboot my machine.
- After reboot my onboard network port will no longer fully connect to my router. The link is detected but IP negotiation fails. I tried different cables and different router ports, I try releasing, renewing, and resetting the adapter. Rebooting. It was definitely my PC. Other devices on the wired network work fine.
- I have a wireless USB network adapter, but it required software to be installed from CD. I shut off the PC to install my CD-ROM drive. Plug it into a sata port and to the PSU.
- Nothing happens when I try to turn the PC back up. No fans or lights
- I fiddle ineffectively with a bunch of stuff. Take out the video card, CD-ROM I just added, and make sure cables are seated. Nothing has any effect.
- I try to short the ON signal to my PSU using a paperclip, this works. My fans and case lights activate.
- I leave the PSU short in and plug it into the mainboard. I can now boot by flipping on the PSU, waiting 4-5 seconds for case fans and lights to come on, and then pushing the case ON button, like normal.
- Everything is working, even my once dead network port.
Some observations that make me suspect the PSU
- Even with the short in place, it takes 4-5 seconds for the case lights and fans to come on. I have to push the power button after the lights are on, and then boot happens as normal.
- Pushing the ON button makes the machine boot. So that suggests the ON switch is working fine. My understanding is this sends a brief signal, and it seems my PSU needs more than a second to turn on now.
I'm open to any suggestions on how to further test this. I'm leaning toward PSU replacement. I'd also like to know if it's dangerous to leave the short in place like I have now. My PC can turn off but the case lights and fans remain on until I flip off PSU power. I just do that anytime I leave the PC alone.
