Hello techies,
This one has be scratching my head. Just over a month ago, I had a perfectly running PC:
i7 5960X with XSPC waterblock ASRock Fatal1ty X99X 32GB Ripjaws Samsung 960 M.2 Sapphire RX Vega 64 with a XSPC waterblock Custom water cooled loop in a Thermaltake Core P5 with a 480mm radiator. Corsair 850W Platinum

So I made the dumb decision to plug in my old Gigabyte R9 290 one evening to see if I could mine some ether while my computer sat at night. I plugged in everything and pressed the power button only to hear a surge go through the speakers and it all went dead. No power. I discovered later I used bad PCI-E cables when hooking up the R9 290 (power-hog), so I caused a short somewhere, or under-powered the cards and the PSU freaked out. Either way, the R9 tried to power itself through the MB and took the whole thing with it.
I RMA'd the motherboard with ASRock (decent customer service, I paid $50 since it was an open box purchase) and now have everything up and running again, BUT, neither of the two GPUs will power on.
For the R9 290 I get a small green LED on the top that I would normally see when the card is in standby. The Vega shows no signs of life. Visual inspection of both boards reveals no obvious burns.
I've tried: - A separate PSU (1000 Corsair that I have as a spare) - Moving the GPUs to a separate box (same results, they don't come out of standby) - Testing voltages on the PCI-E lines from the PSU - Computer boots with an NVIDIA 730 (MB power required only, no PCI-E power) just fine, all other lanes are working - Tried all three PCI-E slots
I'm a bit stumped. I've sent an e-mail to Sapphire to inquire on a price to fix the card (since I put a waterblock on it and it won't be under warranty any more).
Any thoughts? The Green LED on the R9 290 really has me confused. Are there circuit protection built into GPUs? Is there a "breaker" of some kind?
Thanks for all your expertise.
Ryan
