In april 2017 I've bought two 'used' r9 290 (exhibition pieces). Both of them 'died' within two weeks this january and I want to find out whether there's anything left to do and if it's worth sending them to experts for repair.
Usage
I've been using them mostly for mining and occasionally for CUDA projects for uni.
Modifications
Since the reference cooler fan is horrible I've replaced both with Accelero Xtreme IV coolers. The BIOS was slightly altered and overclocked to increase it's performance.
Temperatures
The general GPU temperature was pretty low mostly (60-70°C max) due to the better fan. However, the VRAM temperature might have been a little high, fluctuating between 95°C and 105°C. Hence, I'd assume something with the VRAMs failed.
Observations
- The GPU doesn't send any video signal itself
- Changing slots, PSU, cables and using it in a different PC altogether doesn't work.
- I was (and am still able to) flash the backup of the ROM back on the GPU with atiflash when I've got a working GPU connected (r9 290 in secondary slot)
- If there's no driver installed, GPU-Z detects the GPU correctly as Hawaii GPU
- If there's a driver installed, it will crash with a BSOD (usually 'THREAD STUCK IN DEVICE DRIVER - atikmdag.sys') shortly after booting to windows

It can't see anything out of the ordinary, though I'm no expert by any means. Maybe some competent fellow can spot something I've missed!
It's a little weird to see them both die withing two weeks after not having any issues for months. I don't really expect some hint on how to fix it myself, but determining what's wrong would be amazing. Maybe some of the experts can assess if it's worth giving it to some store to repair, if it's just the VRAM that should be an option, correct?
