Hi folks
I have a problem with my home broadband, which is standard issue (for the UK) ADSL over the copper phone line.
The line comes into the house upstairs into the master socket where it's connected to the Sky router (an old Sagemcom) - this has to be connected to the ADSL for the connection to work. It acts as the modem and DHCP server.
Because the majority of devices we use are downstairs, we have thick walls, and the WiFi range isn't great, I run this router into a powerline network via TP-Link AV600 connectors. A Windows PC is also wired directly into the upstairs adapter.
Via the powerline network I have, downstairs, a TP-Link WR940N router which serves as a wireless access point. My Xbox One connects to this via a cable, otherwise all the other devices connect via WiFi.
The problem I am having is a regular dropping of the ADSL connection. The WiFi and LAN seem fairly solid. At any one time we can have a couple of smartphones, a couple of tablets, and maybe the smart TV using the internet. The connection is about 20mpbs so fairly fast for ADSL. However, it seems that when a lot of us are using the connection, it is more prone to dropping. I can use the wired-in PC and Xbox for hours without it dropping when it's that and maybe one smartphone connected, but a few minutes with a few of us on wireless devices and it drops.
What I find odd is that the wireless connection is steady, it is definitely the incoming ADSL connection that goes - I can go into the settings for the Sky router and it shows the ADSL as disconnected until it recombobulates itself.
Sky (the ISP) have run line checks and have found no problem. Plugging in a landline phone gives a clear ringtone. I have a microfilter in place and have tried using the test socket - it makes no difference. Unfortunately I can't test another router on the ADSL line as it will only connect with a Sky one.
Is it possible that a device is causing the ADSL to drop, or is it more likely dodgy wiring or a faulty box?
