I'm gonna help a friend of my mother's with some basic computer-related stuff and noticed I myself could use some tips regarding this as I have gotten really lazy. I googled, but still have questions and I'd like to hear your opinion/advice on it.
From what I’ve read, if a BIOS update is necessary comes down to if something important has been patched. On my PC, it’s been a while since I’ve done it, “a while” being 5 years. I don’t really know if anything crucial has been updated, though. Here’s a link with the relevant part of the release notes. I know the chance that I mess up is slim, but why risk it if it’s not needed (at least for now, I have to finish a paper and not gonna touch the BIOS before that).
Is Windows Defender enough or should I just go with free version like Kaspersky? Afaik she’s visiting just harmless sites, although I’m gonna ask her about that again when I meet her. I tried reading up on it but in the end it seemed like everyone has a different opinion on this.
I know the best way to check if you need those are to disable them and see if anything is affected. I think Flash in particular she can do without (I mean I can), but I have no clue which programs use Java at this point. Any advice on this?
This is where I feel kind of dumb. What even needs updating except for graphics cards? Should I just go with “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it?” and only check Windows Update and if the device manager complains about anything?
Should/Can I use CCleaner? I know there’ have been some big security concerns, but are those still relevant? CCleaner has the advantage of being an all-in-one solution to what I wanna do (look at startup, uninstall programs, clean temp files etc.; not gonna use registry cleaner). I know there is other software like Bleachbit and (Windows) programs I can use to achieve the same, but in general it’d be interesting to know if CCleaner is deemed safe again.
Other than that, any tips regarding basic computer maintenance? I’ll check if the applications she uses are up to date and will let AV software scan the system.
Any help is appreciated, you don't have to answer every point.
