Lurker here, but dire times necessitate posting.

My elderly father was having trouble connecting the home scanner/printer combo (hp envy 7640) to the home windows computer (windows 10, Lenovo H530s)). My father googles something like hp printer tech support and gets in touch with a 'legit looking' website of a tech support company, named Tecknosoft LLC. The person who remoted into the home computer for the tech support then asked for $250 to install a firewall on our computer and claimed that giving him banking information would be the safest way to transfer the funds.

My father calls me in the middle of this remote logging in. I advise him to disconnect the computer and internet modem from any ethernet connection immediately and i believe he did so. My father did not give out any financial information.

Is this company a scam like it sounds like it is? Is there a possibility of any damage done to my father's system? What steps should i take to remedy the situation?

Most importantly how can i make the computer dummy proof for my father so he doesn't have the ability to do something like this?

Im working late today and don't have the time to research it or expertise. Any advice would be helpful. How do you deal with computers of the elderly so they don't screw them up?
