The startlingly political trailer asks what "makes America great."
Viewers who continued watching the news to catch the analysis after President Donald Trump's address Tuesday night may have witnessed an unsettling ad. The dystopian Purge franchise has always engaged political themes, hinting at a criticism of Trumpismwith its "Keep America Great!" tagline on the poster for 2016's installment. But nothing comes close to the explicit criticism on display from the new ad campaign for the upcoming Purge film, which chronicles how a violent American tradition emerges after a nationalist political organization called the New Founding Fathers of America shifts the country from a democracy to an authoritarian state.
“What makes America great?” the Southern-tinged voiceover begins. “The answer’s simple, really. Americans make America great. You are the lifeblood of the nation and your rights as Americans must be safeguarded. There is only one solution to keep our country great — a new tradition."
Families are shown amid patriotic scenes and American flags. In the final moments, viewers learn they're watching a trailer for The First Purge.
"Participate today and nothing will make you prouder than when your boy looks up at you and says, ‘Dad, I wanna purge too.”
As the clip cuts to a still image of a red Trump-style baseball cap with the film title, the release date is announced: July 4.
