So my company is finally ready to upgrade to an actual server, and not just an external hard drive mapped as a network drive. I am tasked with pricing out a new server, installing and configuring the necessary apps as requested. While I am familiar with a few of the apps I will be installing, most of the apps that I will be working with I have little to no experience in. So here are my goals for this server...
Primary server tasks include:

File Server (w/Remote Access)

QuickBooks Database Server

Local PC backups (Selected folders only, not the entire desktop)

Option to Integrate with Office 365 if approved (for Exchange)

Print Server
On top of those primary tasks, I would like to setup a VM environment to allow for a few other apps as well. List of VM apps include:
A few minor things about the company:

~10 Users
-
~6 Windows Desktops, 1 Windows Laptop, and 1 Linux laptop

all will need remote access to at least the file server
Hopefully I've answered enough to state how in over my head I am and would like some guidance, particularly on what OS I should use and how to configurethe parent VM environment. From what I have researched so far, it sounds like I should use Windows Server Essentials to allow for the primary server tasks, and then setup VMware ESXi for the VM apps. While I know what those OSs are, I have no clue how to properly set them up or how to let them work together. Maybe install ESXi as the parent OS and setup a VM with WSE alongside the other VMs? Not sure.
On The hardware side, I figured I could get approval along the line of a Dell T30 or some type of HP ProLiant. I have to keep this server (along with it's software) under $800-$900, even then my boss is unsure at that price point.
I am willing and eager to learn how to configure all of these apps and more, just not quite sure where to start proper.
