(technically this is about passwords, which I know isn't allowed, but I'm not trying to give my password out or get someone to help me hack in or anything that I can think that rule would've been made for so hopefully this is OK to post?)
A while ago my phone decided to keep prompting me for my Google log in. I use Google a lot - Gmail, play store, you tube, drive etc. I had recently repurposed some old phones as WiFi only mp3 players and had to log in to do so, so I figured that was why.
The thing was, it kept saying my password was incorrect, so I'd end up having to go through the process of resetting it with security questions etc. Then of course I'd have to sign back in to everything on all devices with the new password. This happened a good 4 or 5 times and was pissing me off because I was sure I was getting the password right.
Finally, I got to a point where it just wouldn't recognise my password on my laptop, and the security process to reset became rediculous, asking for details about when I set up my account, secret questions, previous answers etc. I also had to enter codes sent to both my mobile and my alternate email. Now, I'm pretty confident I got all of those right, the only thing I couldn't be sure of was the set up date (it was absolutely years ago, I was one of the earlier people to get a Gmail account). But it kept saying I hadn't 'passed' so it wouldn't let me reset the password.
There was no contact, no helpline, nothing. Just a "sorry not sorry, better go make another account, pal" message.
Weirdly, I'm still logged in on my phone, so I can access everything fine there. I can also use drive on both my work laptop and home laptop. I can't log in to Gmail or YouTube on my home laptop, but chrome seems to know we're the same user because when I watch a video on yt at home (not logged in), it comes up with related suggestions when I visit yt (also not logged in) at work. This is currently not a huge issue, but I'm really scared about losing access on my phone, because then I'm REALLY screwed.
My work laptop is getting reset by IT on Monday. I currently use drive to work on documents easily at home and at work, and pay for extra storage. It's hugely important for me. Short term, I can just use a USB stick, but when I get it back, I'm going to have to try (and subsequently fail) to log in to drive again. So then my drive subscription will be useless.
Can anyone help me with this? Is this a bug or something (it was so weird how it kept declining my passwords)? Is there a human contact number/email? How the hell do I get my full access back?! Why won't it let me reset the password when I enter all the correct verification codes, security answers, previous passwords, birthdate, etc - and why ask me all of that if it's going to reject me for not knowing the month and year I created it?!
And worse case scenario - any tips for transitioning to a new account if I have to abandon this one? Is there an easy way to move things over - particularly for drive?
Thanks (sorry its long - just hope someone can help. I've been so reliant on my Google account for so long, it feels like part of my identity almost!
