First up, I'm fairly basic at computers and may well use incorrect terminology or whatever, so apologies in advance.
Ok. So I inherited a desktop from someone, which was lovely. I started her up and noticed it only had 4gb of ram. Now, my fifteen year old computer also had that much, and I figured I could double my ram by adding the old ram to the new.
I compared the two, and apart from my old ram having shiny copper cooling things on, they looked the same. I figured "what the hell", and tried to fit them. With the jacket things they seemed unwilling to just drop in to the slot, but with some gentle pressure they clicked in.
I fired up the beast and all the lights came on, but nothing happened - there was no connection to the monitor and none of the usb bits came on. "Arse", thinks I. Unplug the ram and pop it back into the old computer, turn the new one back on, and same situation.
A quick Google gave me conflicting info - using the wrong ram should just break the ram slot if my gentle waggling was actually excessive force, but otherwise no harm done; and using the wrong ram could melt my cpu and destroy my motherboard.
Not really sure which to believe, though given that I can't get the computer to do anything beyond power up suggests the latter might be right? Or am I more likely to have clumsily knocked a small cable out of something while fiddling with ram, and that's the problem?
Any advice welcomed. Thanks
