Greetings /r/techsupport,

This is a continuation of a previous post I made, but now that I know what the problem is, I'm wondering the best way to handle it.

A 15-q667nr (HP Envy 15) recently just had it's processor break. It still works, but once it reaches heavy loading for about a minute, the CPU clock jitter skyrockets, and in the best case scenario the computer freezes. It has shut off numerous times in a similar fashion to other laptops overheating, but the temperature sensor on the processor never reports anything higher than 70 C. The fan also doesn't seem to spin up to its max values, staying no higher than 3000 rpm.

Unfortunately, the warranty is expired, however, the owner of this machine has sent it in to HP for repairs twice, and the last time the motherboard seems to have been switched. Would time be better wasted trying to convince them to replace the CPU for free, or would the user be better off looking for a new laptop?

Thanks in advance!
