Hi, My wife's desktop (Dell All-in-one Inspiron 5348 running Windows 10) has been without audio for several months. We don't know exactly when this happened, or what we might have done to trigger a problem. (One of those things that we keep meaning to get to, but other stuff pops up.)
Anyway, the computer simply generate any audio through its integrated speakers. We have no external speakers attached. We've checked obvious things like making sure the speakers aren't muted, making sure the volume is turned up. The thing that's odd is that plugging in a pair of headphones into the desktop jack generates a pop-up screen asking what I'm plugging in. When I choose headphones, audio works fine through those headphones. But when I disconnect those headphones, no sound from the integrated speakers.
Just tonight, I've re-installed the Realtek High Definition Audio Driver (downloaded directly from Dell's website), but that doesn't seem to have helped. We've also run the diagnostic upon boot that determines whether there are any hardware issues, and that diagnostic didn't identify any problems. My wife ran this diagnostic while on the phone with Dell support, and they said since there was no hardware problem, it had to be a software/driver problem, and they'd charge $129 to fix it. I'd obviously prefer not to pay that.

During the boot process, there are several speaker-sounding "click" or "popping" noises. I'm not sure how else to describe them.

When I click the Dell Audio icon in the system tray and choose "Audio Devices", under playback devices, I only see a single entry: Speakers/Headphones (Realtek High Definition Audio). When I should hear audio (e.g., when a youtube video is playing), there's a green equalizer graphic next to that playback device suggesting that there's audio playing.
Happy to provide any followup information. Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.
