Hello all!
A hard drive of this exact type http://www.verbatim.com/prod/hard-drives/portable/store-n-go-usb-3.0-sku-99373/ has been the media storage space for my MacBook Air for about half a year and it's been working just fine. Today my MacBook crashed and after I got it back up and running I noticed that it didn't seem to recognize the external hard drive at all. I unplugged it and rebooted the MacBook. Same result. Disk Utility doesn't acknowledge the HDD whatsoever, nor does finder.
I took the HDD over to my Windows 10 PC and plugged it in. I got the "you plugged something in" noise and then nothing at all. I checked devices and noticed the drive as a USB device with an angry yellow triangle on it. I tried troubleshooting but it says it can't find the issue. I then had a look in properties and found mention of a pnp error and Code 10. Googling these terms have only confused me further. I tried deactivating, reactivating the device, as well as updating the drivers, but Windows just says everything is fine, which it obviously isn't.
I remember salvaging a dying hard drive once so I booted a live USB version of Ubuntu and popped the drive in once more. Ubuntu's disk tools don't even recognize it.
What baffles me so much is that the drive light is lit and the HDD itself is whirring, albeit in a manner I'd describe as stammering. It will tick-tock, then wind down for a second before repeating endlessly. I don't really have a good way to record the noise.
The data on the drive is completely replaceable and re-downloadable, but I don't remember half of what was on it so I don't know what to replace. I'd be happy with a broken or formatted drive if I could only have a look at the file list or at least get a clue as to what was on it before I either recycle it or got a replacement.
What also boggles my mind is whether this model's enclosure even remotely possible to open and dismantle? I can't find anything on it online. It feels prudent to try the drive itself in another enclosure before giving up.
I don't believe my hardware specs are relevant at this time, but I'm running a MacBook Air 2015 and a Windows 10 Home edition with 16 GB RAM, Ryzen 7, Nvidia 1070 GPU and 2x2TB hard drives, as well as a 500GB SDD. As mentioned previously, the External HDD in question is a Verbatim 1TB Store 'n' Go Portable Hard Drive, USB 3.0.
Any assistance at all is appreciated. Thanks for reading!
