Symptoms: system runs fine for the first half-hour or so, but quickly crashes with a bluescreen (and a useless QR code) when I run games or transcode video.
Could pegging the temp at max have cooked something? I don't have any indication that it ever went above the CPU's rated max.
Story: After running into the crash a few times, I loaded up Open Hardware Monitor. Most temps seemed fine (in the 20-40 C range), but "Temperature 1" seemed to be stuck at 61C. I figure this must be the CPU -- 61 seems to be the max temp for FX-8350s. I then noticed my Corsair all-in-one liquid cooler was blowing out cool air, so I immediately ordered a Cooler Master 212 EVO. I just performed the swap last night, and when I ran Handbrake (transcoding -- all cores in use) "Temperature 1" quickly climbed from the low 30s to the low 50s (under 5 minutes). After 20 minutes, it was still running, and temps got up to 58C, so I left it chugging along and went to bed. This morning, it was totally unresponsive. I have no data on how long it ran or what the temps were, but it didn't finish transcoding the video so I assume it was less than 90min uptime. New cooler appears to have made no difference. Most of the time, I get no error message -- the screen is off when I come back to find it unresponsive, and will not come back on. When it crashes while in use, I get some useless BSOD with a QR code basically just telling me that it crashed.
System was built in early 2015 (no problems until recently):
