I have a Dell system I'm using for a File Server/Torrent Box/HTPC. I've filled the internal SATA slots with a 1TB HDD, two 3TB HDDs & Blu-Ray player. It came with 4 USB 3.0 ports. Please don't have a stroke, but due to financial constraints I've been buying external WD HDDs as I could to expand storage...I know, it's not the greatest option.
I have a 1TB HDD (usb 2.0), 6TB HDD (usb 3.0) and three 8TB HDDs (usb 3.0) occupying the 6 USB 3.0 ports. 38TB total.
I need to add another external HDD as soon as possible (probably 8TB).
QUESTION: Can I buy a 7-Port USB 3.0 HUB, for example, unplug my 6TB Ext HDD from a USB 3.0 port and plug the HUB into that no open USB port? And then can I plug the 6TB HDD back into the newly acquired HUB and just keep adding EXT HDDs to that HUB?
If that's possible, does it have a negative affect on transfer speeds between devices on the hub? or between devices on the hub and the computer?
I know this is like the single worst way to build a sizeable server, but I can't afford to do it the right away and I'm such a download whore I am filling 8TB drives pretty quickly.
