I made a post recently stating that the laptop I inherited has a problem where it shuts down after exactly 30 minutes. Since then, I've been troubleshooting the problems and I have more information that can hopefully lead to someone knowing how to help.
Foreword: This laptop is a few years old, so it's well beyond a warranty period.
For starters: This is an HP Pavilion 17-e112dx running Windows 8.1. It was lightly used in a very clean house for word processing and light browser browser games.
I received this laptop and the first thing I did was a clean wipe of all user data, which was successful. The laptop works fine and performs perfectly with no hiccups.
However, no matter how much or how little I do, the laptop will shut off after exactly 30 minutes. There is no error message. It's as if I held down the power button down. It's on, and then it's off and I hear a click as the HDD reseats.
I've tried letting it sit with just the battery, just the power, and a combination of the battery and power cord simultaneously.
I've removed the RAM and held down the power button to drain any remaining power and then reseated the RAM.
I've replaced the RAM with compatible RAM from my backup laptop.
I've left the laptop in the BIOS menu, and it still shuts off after 30 minutes.
I've tried running Ubuntu in Live mode from a flash drive; it still shuts off after 30 minutes.
I've constantly monitored the temperature with HWMonitor and it never exceeded an average of 50C.
I've updated as many drivers as I could find on HP's website, as well.
Something I've noticed: Putting the computer in sleep mode (for any interval of time, even a couple of seconds) and then waking it up resets this "timer" and I gain an additional 30 minutes before it shuts off.
The only thing I haven't tried is messing with BIOS settings. This particular laptop comes with BIOS that are a restricted consumer version. I'm unable to do much in the BIOS, but I feel as though messing with the BIOS settings won't change much as this is a new problem.
Does anyone have any other advice for things I could try? I'm actually making this post on the laptop in question right now, hence my frustration. It works perfectly fine aside from this weird 30 minute time limit.
