Hello, as far as I know there is a simple explanation to our situation that I just don't know about. We pay for 150Mb/s Cox internet. Sometimes, we get 150 and it's great. Low latency, low jitter, overall great connection.
But we've had problems in the past, had 2 Cox techs come out and make minor changes and then the problem would go away. But now it's back with a vengeance and I know I will probably have to call them again, but I want to know more about what is happening / what I can tell them instead of "We're still lagging!"
Sometimes, I (on Ethernet) cannot load speedof.me, speedtest.net, reddit, google, or anything at all. You can click reddit, the top bar and a few graphics would show up, and then it would stop pulling data. Refresh, same thing. Restart router, same thing. Restart modem, it's fixed for like an hour @ 150Mb/s and then goes back to this.
Wireless clients have it worse. My roommates, 30-60 feet away from the router on wireless, get strong Wifi strength, and terrible internet. Sometimes Chrome comes back with weird errors like INVALID_REDIRECT and DNS_PROBE_FINSIHED_NXDOMAIN. Those do not seem to happen on Ethernet however.
Here is the current setup:
-
Netgear CM500 Docsis 3.0 16/4 Cable Modem
-
Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 Router
-
My desktop PC directly connected to the router
-
Numerous wireless devices on 2.4 and 5GHz
Cox has done the following:
-
Replaced the coaxial connection from the wall, and tried other rooms
-
Added an coaxial amplifier plug YS16F on the other side of the house (I really don't like the fact we have to have that)
I have tried the following:
-
Tried a different router (Asus RT-NN66R)
-
Tried multiple older modems
-
Replaced ethernet cables
-
Updated router firmware
-
Set my PC's DNS to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4
-
Set my router's DNS to 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 (this seemed to help wireless clients that were getting Chrome's INVALID_REDIRECT or DNS_PROBE_FINSIHED_NXDOMAIN somewhat)
-
Set my router's MAC address to my PC's mac address
-
Set my router to handle IPv6 auto instead of disabled
-
Reset modem/router to factory settings multiple times and tried maybe one of the above bullet points at a time with 0 progress.
Here is some data:
-
An infuriating Pingplotter result (Why do I have 80.4% packet loss to my own router on Ethernet)
-
And earlier that day, a great Pingplotter result (It's like this after a modem reset for a bit too)
I am highly confused by the randomness that speed tests seem to have. It's either 150 Mb/s or the page won't even load and the test is impossible.
Our Cox tech said he could see our connection coming up in critical condition according to Cox's end. We live in an older neighborhood that has cable coming from overhead lines, and some go through trees. He says he isn't surprised that we have bad connection because we are so far from the pole and it's an old line or something.
Really, the thing I most want to know about is the packet loss in Pingplotter. Sometimes, while it's giving me terrible results, speed tests say everything is fine. If anyone has any idea of what is happening, let me know. As far as I know there is nothing left I can do, but if you have any other fixes in mind I'm all ears (eyes).
