No, I don't mean it magically started working. I mean, it randomly crashed during a Windows update on Friday, and ended up in a no-boot state. Hitting the power button would make it attempt Auto Repair, blue screen on the "Preparing Auto Repair" screen, restart, and load forever on the Lenovo splash page.
I spoke with a Microsoft lady (very helpful and patient) who directed me to some guides she had written about creating a bootable USB to do a custom install of Windows 10 over my corrupted OS. By all means should've worked -- I tested the USB with a few outside programs to make sure I'd done it right and it was bootable, then toyed around in my laptop's BIOS to make sure I had the partition right and it was set to allow USB's to boot it. Yet it refused each time, booted like normal (AKA Auto Repair, bluescreen, forever loading...).
The other thing I tried was to turn it off and on a few times to get to Advanced Recovery but alas the bluescreen would always beat me to it. I ended up asking the Microsoft lady if I would just have to cut my losses and wipe the computer, and she reminded me that I could at least save my files first using Linux, since my hard drive was fine. Changed the USB over to Linux, booted it with it, viewed the files, remembered I left all my blank DVD's in the garage and that it was 2am. I decided to close the laptop for the night and save everything and wipe in the morning.
Well this morning when I turned it on, instead of trying to run Auto Repair, I got a message that I should press any key if I wanted to cancel scan and repair. I let it go, and in a matter of minutes, the laptop had scanned and repaired drive C:, asked if I wanted to continue, then proceeded to run the interrupted Windows updates, and now it's working like nothing ever happened.
I do plan to run some diagnostics to make sure all is well, but I'm just curious on the how-and-why it managed to scan and repair itself after two days of being unable to do anything but bluescreen and restart repeatedly. I understand that if the OS "senses" (for lack of better term) something corrupt it can trigger it, but I was under the impression that it was quite broken, and am curious how it only happened after two days of poring over the issue. Technology sure is something :P
