I have an Acer Aspire V17 Nitro Black Edition (VN7-791G-792A) with Windows 10 that I use for all my college classes. I bought it about three years ago specifically for my engineering classes.
When I power on the laptop after having shut it off completely, the screen stays blank (no flicker, nothing). The power LED comes on, the keyboard back light comes on, the fans spin on for a bit, the HDD spins up and the disk drive spins up on occasion. After anywhere from a few seconds to a couple minutes, the fans kick off and the drives stop spinning. The LEDs are all still on, the laptop gets really hot and the one of the fans keeps cycling between spinning up and shutting off. Like its trying to spin up but its caught in a loop. I have had it stuck at this point anywhere from two minutes to four hours. It seems like the time it takes has gotten longer and longer since this issue first started. Once it decides to boot up, the computer is fine. It's not slower than before. There's no sign of errors, crashing or anything.
I have done some troubleshooting on my own:
- Re-seat RAM, SSD, HDD and everything else connected to motherboard - Reboot, same issue.
- Removing one RAM stick - Reboot, same issue.
- Swapping one RAM stick to second slot - Reboot, same issue.
- Removing the other RAM stick, installing the other one - Reboot, same issue.
- Swapping the slot with that RAM stick - Reboot, same issue.
- Disconnecting battery, power up with direct power - Reboot, same issue.
- Disconnecting secondary HDD - Reboot, same issue.
- Removing everything except SSD (including: HDD, CD drive, usb ports, Wifi card, keyboard, battery) - Reboot, same issue.
The only thing I have not tried is booting up without the SSD installed (which has Windows installed on it). I don't think that will do anything though. I spent all day yesterday trying to get it to boot up to work on homework but I had no luck. This morning, I hit the power button to try my luck and it started up in about 25 minutes. I have never run into an issue like this before and just wanted to get another opinion on what could be wrong.
It seems to me that the motherboard is failing and is probably about to die completely. Unfortunately, a replacement is about $600 dollars.
What else should I try? What else could be wrong?
The last thing I will try will be to reinstall windows to see if that fixes anything.
