edit: I managed to get it to record, but the volume is EXTREMELY low. I would have to scream to get a decent volume. I hope this narrows things down. Brand name is definitely Plantronics, I found it marked on the headset

I plug it in and it recognizes it as "Mic In" automatically. But when I tried to record a sound it didn't work. I flicked the switch thinking maybe it was off, and there was still no noise when I tried. I plugged it into the speaker port just to see what would happen and it recognized it as headphones, so it seems my computer is definitely recognizing it.
I unfortunately don't know the brand of the headset because I got it from my cousin and he says he doesn't know the brand. It's brand new because it still had plastic around it, just didn't have that cardboard part that actually says the brand.
I think it is a Plantronics because I Googled the only markings I could find on it "PLT" and "RIG".
So I'm hoping you can tell me what steps I need to go about so I can start recording?
Thanks so much guys. I'm not really that computer Savvy and Im pretty young so I'm not great with this stuff.
