My mom’s win 8.1 laptop has been having an issue with “kernal data inpage errors” for a while now, and while I haven't been able to try every possible fix yet, I have a feeling it’s a physical problem with the hard drive, since it is continuously making odd clicking noises. This actually isn’t my issue however; My mom got herself a new “maxone” external hard drive this afternoon to have transferable copies of her files ready if and when she decides to replace the laptop. So this afternoon I started moving most of the larger more important files over and everything seemed to work just fine, I even tested it on other computers and while a couple required me to install the drivers in device manager it all worked pretty flawlessly. But just when my mom plugged it back in and started looking for other files she’d like to save just in case, it blue screened again, and once we had restarted the computer, the external hard drive was no where to be found, not even in the disk manager. In device manager it shows up with the other USB devices as “mass usb storage” but when I either try to update, (or even uninstall, shut down, and reinstall the drivers) it just updates drivers for a “mass usb storage” device (which I am sure was not the name of the drivers when I installed them the first time, although to my frustration I cannot remember what it was called, other then it was not the product name of “maxone”) when it finishes updating/installing it always says it is up to date, but it still will not work and when I check the properties of the “mass usb storage” it consistently says “this device cannot start, error 10”. I’ve tried everything that I can find about this and every path I take seems to be a dead end for me. Is this the point where I just give up and get a new one? Thanks so much, my mom and I surely appreciate it.

Edit: misspelled “maxone”
